We have selected our 2024 grants! Check back for the 2025 application in spring/summer 2025.

Brigade Project:

Outdoor Libraries

The Cham Pami Book Club is made up of women ranging in age from 40s to 80s, with varying beliefs and life experiences, who connected over our shared neighborhood and a love of reading and learning. We want to do more for our community and are inspired by our beloved leader to encourage others to read, learn, discuss, and expand their horizons by sharing books with their neighbors. Collectively, we decided on a plan to create several Outdoor Libraries in various parks around the neighborhood.

In phase one, we will create our first Outdoor Anchor Library in one
park location (currently King Park is our preferred location). Our vision is that this initial location would house the main little free library, two benches, a small paver stone area, and a memorial tree and plaque.

In phase two, we envision a couple of options, including expanding the original Anchor Library by extending the pavers, adding a pergola structure, and additional plantings. Another option for phase two is to create more Outdoor Libraries at other park locations that would include additional, smaller little free libraries and seating.

We are seeking this grant to help defray the cost of building, purchasing, and installing phase one: the little free library, two benches to surround the area, paver stones, and starting the library off with an initial supply of books for the community. We plan on using volunteers to help install the project where possible. Our Book Club plans on purchasing a memorial tree and plaque with our own funds to honor Pami. Dan Rapp, another Weatherby resident and Pami’s brother, has offered to design and construct the structure for the little free library so that it will not only be functional but also beautiful. We estimate the remaining cost of this project to be $5,000 and are asking for a grant in this amount.

Our goal is to install the little free library, tree, and corresponding features in the Spring of 2023, so that the completed Outdoor Library can be enjoyed by all residents before the start of the best season at the lake – Summertime!

We see this project as having the potential to grow in the future in many ways. Some possibilities include the addition of other library locations, creating a neighborhood children’s book club, and providing leadership opportunities for youth in the community who want to take a role in maintaining the Outdoor Libraries by managing the supply of books as well as beautifying the area around the library with flowers or other plantings. We believe there is a real opportunity for these places to foster community engagement and strengthen leadership skills as the residents use the Outdoor Libraries for service projects and to create their own book and discussion clubs.
