Lantz’s legacy strengthens and unites.

Improving Weatherby

Lantz Welch left a larger-than-life-footprint on his community. He was the visionary behind Weatherby Lake’s castle and resided at “Lantzlot” on the lake for more than 50 years. When he married Laura Welch, Weatherby became her home too.

Lantz Welch was one of Weatherby’s most notable residents. He was active in the Fishing Club and the very beginnings of the Yacht Club. He funded the first Junior Sailing boats to help Weatherby Lake kids learn to sail.

Lantz supported WLIC and the City of Weatherby on many projects. He helped set bylaws and funded the original “Phillip A. Welch Memorial Bridge” over Barry Road.

In 1995, Lantz created Weatherby’s Joseph A. Sherman Award for Volunteerism to honor his good friend and adversary. Joe Sherman was one of Lantz’s neighbors and a prominent defense attorney whom Lantz met in court many times. This program awards one Weatherby Lake Volunteer of the Year annually. It creates a friendly competition among many citizens who vie to win its recognition.

Lantz’s Legacy

A compassionate attorney.

Lantz was the first attorney to successfully take on the chemical industry for water and ground pollution resulting in a record verdict in favor of his clients. He was a champion for people who would otherwise be taken advantage of and often dug into his own pockets when his plaintiffs ran out of funds to pursue a lawsuit.

Lantz successfully represented victims of the Hyatt disaster and was known as a fearless lawyer who took on Corporate America. He meticulously researched and prepared for each case living by his “Seven Ps” motto: prior perfect planning prevents piss poor performance. The Winston Churchill quote hanging above the desk in Lantz’s law office said it all about his tenacity. It read “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty; never give in.” This phrase characterizes every aspect of his life.

A servant’s heart.

Lantz left a legacy of service and community participation. He had a servant’s heart and cared deeply for people. He was an advocate for what he cared about, and he cared about those whose voices were hard to hear. Lantz and Laura devoted their resources to the needs of at-risk, urban core youth.

A real character.

Sir Lantzlot always played as hard as he fought in the courtroom. He was a passionate and enthusiastic hobbyist, always striving to be the best. He enjoyed flying aerobatic airplanes, scuba diving and underwater photography, sailing, ski racing, billiards, and ping pong. He was a voracious reader and lover of music, fine wine, food, and cigars.
